2L Class President

Dear Class of 2028, we made it. And I mean that.

The terrain at Southern wasn't easy. There were moments we wished we could have back, professors who pushed us beyond what we thought we were capable of, days we questioned whether we were built for this, and nights that stretched far longer than they should have. Looking back now, I realize every challenge served a purpose. It shaped us, strengthened us, and more than anything, brought us together.

Now we begin our second year. Welcome to your Second Seat. You belong here. This is more than a publication — it is our commitment to you. Every month, The Second Seat will keep you connected to your leadership team, your classmates, and the opportunities that shape our experience at Southern University Law Center. Communication should never be an afterthought, and this year it won't be.

Although this letter bears my name, none of what we have accomplished has been the work of one person. Our Chief of Staff, Emani Babin, is the driving force behind this administration. Our Deputy Chief of Staff, Toshiba Robinson, has developed the systems that strengthen communication. Our 2L Representative, Annika Robinson, and our Director of Student Voices, Jordan Williams, have already begun creating initiatives that will expand community engagement and elevate the Class of 2028.

This is your family. This is your Second Seat. Take it. Welcome back.

Chief of Staff

Can I just begin by saying congratulations. You've come a long way, this Second Seat is yours, and I celebrate that with you.

I have the honor of serving as Chief of Staff to our 2L Administration. I believe in setting clear objectives and accomplishing them with excellence — that is how I approach leadership, service, and every responsibility entrusted to me.

With that in mind, know that your name carries significance, your perspective has value, and you contribute something completely irreplaceable to the rich tapestry of Southern University Law Center.

More than anything, I want you to know this: if it matters to you, it matters to me, and it matters to this administration. We are committed to serving this class with excellence, fostering a stronger community, and ensuring that every member of the Class of 2028 is informed, supported, and represented.

Here's to a leadership team committed to raising the ceiling, expanding what's possible, and having the courage to do things differently.

Robinson

Deputy Chief of Staff

If you've walked these halls, you've probably seen me coming bright as a rainbow, dressed to the nines, and sharp as a tack. I'm Shiba Robinson, your Deputy Chief of Staff, and the honor of being named Best Dressed by my peers — thank you, TRULY, that one meant a lot.

I'm an Atlanta, GA native, wife, dog mom, and mother of two girls. One is also in law school, and one is finishing up undergrad — so yes, my calendar and travel schedule stay full.

I walked into SULC with an MBA and 24 years of corporate mortgage experience: originating loans, closing deals, sitting across the table from attorneys and wondering what they actually knew that I didn't. Turns out, a lot. Enough to make me pack up and go back to school. My legal interests are rooted in where the money resides: Real Estate and Property Law, Financial Law, Bankruptcy, and Debt Management.

Consider me your Fun Auntie — the one you come to for love, hugs, advice, and the hard conversations. My goal this year is simple: make sure the Cabinet actually works for you, not just around you. Your voice deserves to be heard, your wins deserve to be celebrated, and your conflicts, opinions, and ideas deserve a real platform. That is exactly what The Second Seat is built to deliver.

2L Representative

Dear 2L Class, I am honored and excited to serve as one of your 2L Representatives this year. As we enter the next chapter of our law school journey, my goal is to help create a class experience that is supportive, engaging, and rooted in community.

As 2Ls, we are stepping into a different kind of challenge. Many people say that 2L year, especially the fall semester, can feel even more demanding because the workload extends beyond the classroom. We are balancing classes, internships, externships, leadership roles, organizations, personal responsibilities, and preparation for our future careers.

As a first-generation law student and someone who values community, service, and student connection, I understand how important it is for our class to feel supported as we navigate this year together. As your representative, I hope to be a voice for our class, strengthen communication, and help support programming that keeps us connected both professionally and personally.

My hope is that we continue building a 2L year that reflects leadership, unity, and purpose. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and represent our class.

Director of Student Voices

Dear Class of 2028, it is an honor to serve as the 2L Class Director of Student Voices, and I am committed to using this role to strengthen communication, foster connection, and ensure that every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

As Director of Student Voices, I am dedicated to creating meaningful opportunities for students to share their perspectives, celebrate their accomplishments, and engage with one another. I will also lead our law school's social media presence, using our platforms to showcase the incredible achievements, accomplishments, and experiences of our students.

I believe our social media should reflect the excellence of our community by celebrating academic success, leadership, service, internships, competitions, campus events, and the everyday moments that define the law school experience.

I am committed to listening, collaborating, and working alongside our 2L President and cabinet to ensure that every voice can be heard. I want our students to be recognized and celebrated while showcasing the strength, talent, and success of the Class of 2028.
